Answers to commonly asked questions...
When are class sessions and how long do they last?
Students typically attend sessions at the Kumon Centre once each week. Each class session is approximately 30 minutes.
If they are in both Math and Reading they may attend once for both subjects (1 hr.) or attend at two times during the week (once per subject) for two 30 minute sessions.
Junior Kumon students will attend twice per week at 20 minutes per session. (based on availability.)
What happens if we miss a class?
If you are late for your appointment time and have not pre-arranged an alternate time, the children may need to pick up assignments rather than stay for the class session.
If, due to illness or unavoidable circumstances, you need to miss a class session we ask that you call in advance and also stop by the centre to drop off completed homework and pick up new assignments during regular class hours.
If class is missed due to weather related issues please come to the next available class session to exchange work.
There are no make-up classes for missed sessions due to space restrictions.
Holidays and Vacations
Kumon is a year round program of daily study. Continued advancement is a result of consistent study which also fosters commitment, dedication and perseverance.
We will prepare a vacation packet of assignments for your child so as to maintain their progress while you are away from the centre. Please allow a minimum of one week notice if at all possible.
Daily practice and disciplined study habits are the ingredients of a successful Kumon experience.
Home grading and timing of assignments
Our Centre policy is that all Math and Reading assignments are to be marked daily by a parent. The reasons for this are:
- It allows your child to learn immediately from any mistakes by correcting them while fresh in mind.
- It encourages children to work harder knowing that work will be checked immediately.
- It helps you monitor your child?s progress as it keeps you aware of their results.
- It leaves more time in the Kumon centre for new concepts or 'what's next'.
- Any assignments that are returned to the centre not marked or not corrected will be reassigned.
Daily timing of assignments along with good accuracy is an important gauge of how your child has grasped to concept and is required to move ahead in the Kumon program.
Parent Interviews and Conferences
Periodically it is important to discuss your child's progress in Kumon with the instructor.
If you wish to discuss their progress or any concerns you may have please contact us by phone or email to set up an appointment.
Appointments will not be scheduled during class time as this is reserved for the students.
Newsletters
Class newsletters are issued approximately six times each year, usually after the 15th of the month. Please check at the appropriate link on this website for the current issue.
How to get started
Placement tests are administered by appointment on Saturdays at the Guildford Centre for both locations.
Following the testing of your children you will be informed of the schedule for the next new parent/student orientation. Both parents are required to attend as well as any students in grade 5 or above. Students in grade 4 or below may not attend.
Tuition fees
The first month's fees and the registration in addition to the last month fees for one subject are payable by cash or cheque at the time of enrollment. The initial month fees are pro-rated (see instructor) but otherwise payments are taken for a calendar month. Subsequent fees are taken by means of an automatic transfer from a chequing account. A NSF fee of $15 will be strictly enforced if any of these cheques or transfers are unsuccessful. Fees are taken on the first of each month.
Notice of account changes must be given by the
15th of a month to take effect for the
end of the
following month.
There are special restrictions on highschool students. Please speak to the instructor.
Tuition fees are non-refundable and must be paid in advance.
Temporary or Permanent Withdrawal
If, after the completion of the minimum one-year of continuous enrollment you need to discontinue Kumon you must give written notice a minimum of 45 days in advance, or in other words by the 15th for the end of the following month. There are forms provided at the centre for this purpose. Re-enrollment after discontinuing Kumon Math, Reading or both will be at the instructors discretion. There isn't any provision for starting and stopping Kumon studies.
